A former catering manager for the Sydney Opera House Simon Lomas has been appointed the new director of food and beverage at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Lomas joins the centre from the Royal Agricultural Society’s Sydney Showground where he was senior manager of food and beverage, a role that involved the management of high-profile events including World Youth Day, the Royal Easter Show and the Big Day Out.
He has almost 20 years’ experience in the food service and hospitality sector, including senior roles at companies including Hospitality Management Australia, Delaware North Australia and Panel Kerr Forster, as well as his position as general manager catering of Rowland Gardner Merchant where he was responsible for the catering operations at the Sydney Opera House.
SCEC chief executive Ton van Amerongen said Lomas was well-known and highly regarded within the food service industry. “Simon is highly qualified and brings invaluable experience overseeing major events of the calibre we host regularly at the Centre,” Van Amerongen said.
“His past work has given him impeccable connections within the food and produce sector and he has the level of operational skills essential for directing the highest standard of catering we require for our international clients.”
Lomas will work alongside Executive Chef Uwe Habermehl, recently appointed to the top role after 12 years at the SCEC and 20 years as a chef in Europe and Australia.
Born and raised in the UK, Lomas studied catering and institutional management at the University College Cardiff before migrating to Australia in 1989.
